Adjustable Cabled Headband KNITTING PATTERN

Materials Needed:

  • 174 yd (79g) of Worsted Weight yarn                   (sample shown is made using Cascade Yarns – Superwash) 
  • size 7 (4.5mm) knitting needles
  • 2 – 1 1/4″ buttons

Knitting Instructions:

Working with 2 strands of yarn held together, work the following:

CO 10 sts

Knit 2 rows

R3: K2, yf, sl1pw, yb, knit until 3 sts rem, yf, sl1pw, yb, K2

R4: K2f&B, K2TOG 3 times, K2f&B

R5: sl1pw, yb, K1, yf, sl1pw, yb, knit until 3 sts rem, yf, sl1pw, yb, K1, yf, sl1pw

R6: K3, buttonhole, K3

Buttonhole Process – Follow the process in my video below to create each buttonhole:

Bring yarn to the front, slip a stitch purl wise, bring yarn to the back again. 

BO 5 stitches by slipping and passing over 5 times.  Replace last stitch on left needle and turn your work around.  Bring yarn to the back. 

Cast on 6 stitches using a cable cast on.  Turn your work around again and make sure the yarn is in the back. 

Slip a stitch from the left needle to the right needle, and pass a stitch over it for reinforcement.  Replace stitch on left needle.

Repeat the following rows until you have a total of 21 stitches (5 1/2″):

R1: sl1pw, yb, K1f&B, yf, sl1pw, yb, knit until 3 rem, yf, sl1pw, yb, K1f&B, yf, sl1pw

R2, 4, 6: Knit

R3, 5: sl1pw, yb, K1, yf, sl1pw, yb, knit until 3 rem, yf, sl1pw, yb, K1, yf, sl1pw

Work the following 4 rows to begin cable section:

R1: sl1pw, yb, K1f&B, yf, sl1pw, yb, K1f&B, knit until 4 rem, K1f&B, yf, sl1pw, yb, K1f&B, yf, sl1pw

R2: Knit

R3: sl1pw, yb, K1, yf, sl1pw, yb, K9, K1f&B, K9, yf, sl1pw, yb, K1, yf, sl1pw

R4: K8, P10, K8

26 sts total

Work these 10 cable rows until the headband measures approx. 16″, ending with a cable row (R1):

R1 (Cable Row): sl1pw, yb, K1, yf, sl1pw, yb, K5, C10B, K5, yf, sl1pw, yb, K1, yf, sl1pw

R2, 4, 6, 8, 10: K8, P10, K8

R3, 5, 7, 9: sl1pw, yb, K1, yf, sl1pw, yb, knit until 3 rem, yf, sl1pw, yb, K1, yf, sl1pw

Work the following 4 rows to finish off cable section:

R1: K8, P10, K8

R2: sl1pw, yb, K1, yf, sl1pw, yb, knit until 3 rem, yf, sl1pw, yb, K1, yf, sl1pw

R3: Knit

R4: sl1pw, yb, K2TOG, yf, sl1pw, yb, K2TOG, K6, K2TOG, K6, K2TOG, yf, sl1pw, yb, K2TOG, yf, sl1pw

21 sts total

Repeat the following decrease until there are 11 sts rem:

R1, 3, 5: Knit

R2, 4: sl1pw, yb, K1, yf, sl1pw, yb, knit until 3 until, yf, sl1pw, yb, K1, yf, sl1pw

R6: sl1pw, yb, K2TOG, yf, sl1pw, yb, knit until 4 rem, yf, sl1pw, yb, K2TOG, yf, sl1pw

Finish off your headband with the following 6 rows:

R1, 3: Knit

R2, 4, 6: sl1pw, yb, K1, yf, sl1pw, yb, knit until 3 rem, yf, sl1pw, yb, K1, yf, sl1pw

R5: K2TOG twice, K3f&B, K2TOG twice

BO, weave in ends.

Your headband should measure around 20 ½” in length.

Sew on 2 buttons approx ½” apart.
